Refresh's 2021 People's Choice Awards: Open-Plan of the Year

Who doesn’t love a nice open-plan living space? We sure do, and you showed these three designs some extra love by voting them the winners of the 2021 People’s Choice Awards for Open-Plan Living of the Year!
Gold Award: Full Coastal Home Renovation and Extension in Wellington by Nick Leko
Home may be where the heart is, but open plan living is where the family is, particularly when that space is a well-designed kitchen and lounge. This carefully-designed reconfiguration of the living and dining areas has created a contemporary liveable space which pays homage to the home’s 1960s character. Pitched ceilings ensure height in the open plan living area, while the feeling of space is enhanced by the exposed beams painted white. Renovated around the home’s seaside views, this property’s open plan living also achieves indoor-outdoor flow, with triple-panel sliding doors opening up to an expansive new deck. 

 
Silver Award: Renovated Villa Inspires Open-plan Living in Wellington by Steve Wang
Award-winning renovations make a statement, which is certainly what this renovated villa has done. A contemporary open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area has been achieved with crisp white cupboards, a bold kitchen island and statement splashback tiles in sea-green.
While space isn’t plentiful, it hasn’t hindered this renovation. Clever layout has ensured functionality doesn’t come at the expense of a relaxed, homely vibe, with designated areas for cooking, eating, and conversation. 
Further flow is achieved with the kitchen and sunny sitting room each given their own set of French doors that swing open to a new platform deck, happily blurring the line between indoors and out. 

Bronze Award: An Eclectic Kitchen Revival in Tawa, Wellington By Mark Morrison
Colour, contrast and a contemporary design gives this award-winning renovation an eclectic vibe, while creating cohesive space between the main areas of the home.
An elongated kitchen bench with an engineered stone island opposite ensures functionality is achieved without encroaching on space. Views are maximised and natural light is abundant with sleek French doors opening from the kitchen and lounge walls.
The open space is accentuated by a balcony deck and neighbouring nature reserve, providing unrivalled views across the greenscape.
