Becoming a homeowner is exciting; you can finally create your dream home without getting permission from a landlord or making temporary changes. When homeowner Laura finally closed on her Auckland CBD property, she wasted no time transforming her kitchen into a space that was better functionally and reflected her personal style. 
Before getting in touch with Refresh Renovations, Laura had spoken to and received a quote from a kitchen design company, but she was unconvinced she’d be getting the result she was after. Laura wanted someone she could trust to handle the project from start to finish, so she contacted local Auckland Renovation Consultants John and Maree de Latour. 

Understanding the Process

Since Laura had never renovated before, she had no idea what to expect. John and Maree put her mind at ease. During their initial consultation, they gave Laura a thorough explanation of the Refresh process and discussed her goals for the project.
When entering Laura’s home, the kitchen is front and centre. As it stood, the kitchen lacked personality and function, both of which Laura wanted to incorporate into the design as well as additional storage and new flooring that would unify the kitchen and lounge spaces.

Adjusting the Scope

The quote she obtained from the original kitchen company gave Laura an indication of what her renovation may cost. Because of that, she planned to spend about $50,000 but the initial quote related to the starting scope she had outlined. 
After considering her options with John and Maree, Laura decided to add a small bathroom refresh, new lighting, and additional cabinetry to the plans which raised the final cost of the project to $63,000.
A niche aspect of the project was constructing the bespoke cabinet to conceal the microwave while also keeping it easily accessible. The space-saving solution was to use a hinge that hovers up rather than hinging open. With the design and product selection complete, John and Maree organised a team from their network of industry professionals to execute the plans. 

The Finished Design

After just four weeks, the crew finished the renovation; the result is a chic and functional kitchen. Adding the peninsula bar provides casual seating which Laura can utilise for work or entertaining guests. The new wood-look vinyl flooring from VidaSpace runs from the kitchen through to the lounge, creating a cohesive, connected space which is enhanced by the addition of the bar. 
The soft, mood lighting under the wall-mounted cabinetry also showcases the marble-look splashback. Other noteworthy design elements are the open shelves, matte black sink, and minimalist drawers and cabinets. John and Maree recommended installing space towers from Blum, to maximise storage space and reduce clutter. 

Final Thoughts

This renovation altered the dynamic of the entire home by creating an inviting entranceway and setting a welcoming tone. The flooring, which played such a key role in transforming the kitchen and lounge is one of the most impactful features. In addition to VidaSpace and Blum, this renovation was completed with materials from Resene, Placemakers, and GIB.
