A Compact Bathroom Renovation Maximises Space in Palmerston North

Handing off to the pros

Avid DIY renovators Mark and Delia first learned about Refresh after attending a seminar held by the Manawatu team. Having executed many renovations on their own, they knew the work and planning that was ahead of them and, since their pending bathroom renovation would require multiple trades, Mark and Delia wanted to hand off the project to a trusted team that could handle it all. 

They reached out to the team at Refresh Manawatu and met with Renovation Consultant Richard Marshall to discuss their upcoming renovation. Mark and Delia’s 1990 single-storey home used to be a rental property but was now their primary residence, so the small, outdated bathroom needed some upgrades.

Coming up with a plan

Richard went over the checklist for the new bathroom with Mark and Delia: lay a new floor, address water damage, adjust the bathroom layout, and provide a modern overall look. While Mark and Delia weren’t strangers to renovations, they hadn’t worked with a team like Refresh, so he guided them through the 5-step process. 

After concluding the initial consultation, Richard managed the behind the scenes operations as concept designs were developed. It was important to Mark and Delia that they reorient the shower to take better advantage of the available floor space, but doing so meant having to move the entry door. To optimise space, the team recommended utilising a barn door as opposed to a traditional or cavity door. These, and other clever solutions, helped Richard give Mark and Delia a project scope that fit within a budget they were comfortable with. 

Getting to work

Once Mark and Delia approved the cost estimate and plans, Richard handed over the Build Phase to Project Manager Zoe Blease, who went ahead and coordinated the extensive team needed to get the job done. This included builders, electricians, plumbers, painters, and flooring specialists. Without Zoe's expert guidance, Mark and Delia would’ve had to spearhead this on their own – exactly what they wanted to avoid!

As is customary with any Refresh project, the timeline and cost estimate are discussed before any renovations actually begin. For this bathroom renovation, the all-inclusive cost estimate came in at $41,741 with a four-week schedule to completion. The final cost was spot on and the team even managed to finish the renovation a day early!

A modern new look

The finished result is a far cry from the original (floorless and dated) bathroom! A white marbled pattern for the sink basins echoes the chosen flooring, while the rest of the palette is mostly neutral, with a warm toned timber vanity and black detailing. The most unique part is the pair of green framed mirrors – with slightly convexed shaping and abstract designs – that showcase Mark and Delia’s personal style. 

Final Thoughts

Zoe is rapt with the results and deems Mark and Delia’s selection of fixtures and finishings to be great choices! But it’s Mark and Delia’s opinion that matters most of all. Luckily, they had nothing but praise for the team at Refresh Manawatu:
