The owner of this Feilding home had specific ideas that he wanted to bring to life in his 1910 villa and having worked with Refresh before, he knew exactly the team to do it.
Having grown up in this Feilding villa, homeowner David had a very particular vision for restoring it to its former glory. The property was built in 1910 and belonged to his parents before he took on ownership.
David had previously worked with Refresh on other projects, specifically with Manawatu Renovation Consultant Wayne Gordon. He trusted Wayne and knew he was the right person for the job, so David was more than happy to continue working together. During their initial consultation, he explained what he had in mind; one-of-a-kind woodworking installations crafted from recycled native timber.
David was completely design-led and trusted that Wayne would remain respectful of his investment, so he didn’t feel it necessary to set a firm budget. He did however prefer that the work be completed in stages and had specific plans about the breakdown over the course of the next two years. He worked from home so they had to plan carefully around his schedule.
As a seasoned professional, Wayne knew that highly-customised projects such as this one often ebb and flow as new inspiration crops up throughout the progression. Because of this, he made sure to build “re-scoping” into the timeline, allowing for creativity to remain fluid in case David wanted to change the design on the fly. Due to the unique nature of the schedule, Wayne provided a detailed build and payment plan that would keep everything on track and everyone on the same page.
This project was focused on aesthetics and quality so a lot of time was spent finding speciality artisans and premium materials. Wayne found a highly-skilled joiner who had designed yacht interiors and was the ideal prospect to make David’s vision a reality. Sourcing the timber proved to be more challenging.
Wayne exhausted his contact list in search of the right materials. After reaching out to a number of private millers, he was able to get in touch with a supplier directly that sourced recycled native timber. David was in no rush and appreciated Wayne’s diligence in finding the right materials instead of hurrying the process along.
As installations began, the native timber’s colours became more apparent and inspired several changes to the design to highlight different pieces as a feature; Wayne’s foresight on this subject came in handy.
The project unfolded as planned and, when it was finally finished, yielded an impressive result. Everything within the design was completely custom to David’s vision from floor to ceiling. A custom wardrobe occupies nearly an entire wall with clothing racks, built-in drawers, and open shelving. Adjacent to the wardrobe is a display of hovering shelves with motion-sensor LED lighting. A window with bench seating, bespoke shelving unit, and white beadboard panelling tie the design together.
David is thrilled with the result as is Wayne who cites the tongue and groove ceilings as a favourite feature. The timeline may appear drawn out but it was necessary for David’s lifestyle and what he wanted to achieve. He enjoyed taking his time to make decisions and it paid off in the end.
