This growing family needed extra space, so they called on the team at Refresh Renovations Manawatu to transform their 1930s bungalow. A sleek extension created a new bedroom, living room and bathroom, and a large new double garage was installed.

Squeezed for Space

Tara and Grant loved their 1930s bungalow in Palmerston North but were starting to feel squeezed for space. Their daughters were sharing a room which wasn’t ideal, and they also wanted a new lounge area. The couple had been working with a home building company on extension plans but were left feeling disappointed with the communication and progress, so they decided to get in touch with their local Refresh Renovation team instead.

Wayne Gordon from Team Manawatu arranged a free consultation with Tara and Grant to discuss their renovation goals, listen to their needs, and explain more about the Refresh process. He assured them that with Refresh, their renovation frustrations would be a thing of the past! As their dedicated project manager, Zoe Blease would be their single point of contact from design through to delivery and would manage every element of their renovation so that the entire process would be straightforward and stress free.

Tara and Grant were relieved to hear that Refresh could help, and excitedly welcomed Zoe on board.

Concept and Design

Tara and Grant knew their home extension would be a significant investment and had planned a generous budget available to achieve their goals. Wayne had captured their ideas and vision for the renovation, and together the team worked with an architect to create plans and price the design.

The architect created an exciting concept that would juxtapose a contemporary extension against the classic bungalow look. A new lounge with a focus on indoor-outdoor flow would bring an increased level of functionality to the home and make it a more social space for the family to enjoy, both on a day-to-day basis and when entertaining. In addition to this, a new large double garage was also added to the side of the house, to provide space for Grant and Tara’s vehicles.

The couple loved the architectural and interior design plans, and once they had approved the plans and the budget, it was full steam ahead with the exciting transformation.

Renovation Underway

A home extension is no small task, but Zoe expertly managed every element of the project so that Tara and Grant could sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey. From contracting and scheduling a plethora of tradespeople (including tilers, plumbers, plasterers, builders, floorers and many more!), to managing waste removal, communications with council, and health and safety requirements, Zoe ensured that every detail was taken care of. She also kept the renovation running to schedule – even when there was the occasional hiccup.

During the outdoor work it was discovered that additional drainage work was needed which ultimately required a sump. But Zoe ensured that Tara and Grant were kept updated through the process as the Refresh team worked hard to find the best solution for the situation. Other than the drainage, the rest of the build and renovation ran smoothly, and the home was completely transformed in a matter of months.

An Exciting New Look

Tara and Grant’s home underwent a massive transformation. The contemporary extension created space for a lounge and new bedroom, both opening onto the fabulous deck that the clients recently had installed, allowing for indoor-outdoor flow. The new double garage provides extra protection of the family’s vehicles - plus additional storage!

Final Thoughts

Zoe and her team transformed a cramped 1930s bungalow into a spacious and modern home that was the perfect fit for her clients. A sleek extension created an interesting architectural feature, and provided much needed space for an additional bedroom, plus a lounge that offered indoor outdoor flow. The much needed new garage not only adds value to the family, but also to the property as a whole. With the help of Zoe and her team, Grant and Tara now enjoy the family home they always dreamed of.
