The project was about a four-bedroom, two-story house in Maupuia, Wellington. The home owners Maxine and Ken Paterson wanted to add an ensuite bathroom into an existing bathroom plus an estimate to upgrade the current bathroom. They also wanted to relocate their existing laundry to the basement to improve its functionality because it was in a small cupboard-like room. They were unsure if their ideas were feasible or within their budget, so they approached Refresh Renovations for guidance.
The client was budget-conscious, so it was important for us to plan and execute based on that. Also, the renovation included remodeling the existing bathroom by removing the wall between the WC and bathroom and converting the basement into an ensuite and laundry. During the demolition phase, there were structural issues at the exterior wall of the basement (to be converted into the ensuite) and the interior wall of the bedroom. The interior wall had to be rebuilt and the exterior had to be reframed and reclad.
The project faced a major challenge as the client was told that converting the basement into an ensuite was not feasible. However, with innovative architectural design and planning, the Refresh Renovations team overcame this challenge by building a subfloor to accommodate the necessary plumbing and drainage.
The renovation resulted in a modern bathroom with subway tiles used in a vertical position to create a visually striking design. The ensuite was fully tiled and included a double bowl vanity which met the client’s desire for a spacious and functional bathroom. The new laundry area was also integrated into the basement to improve its functionality.
One of the innovative products used in the project was the Symphony Pinnacle shower tray, which has a low height profile of 26mm (whereas a standard tray is 80mm high) and is made of acrylic. This was ideal due to the subfloor, creating a lower ceiling.
The project was initially scheduled to take 7 weeks but was extended to 9 weeks due to variations and the time required for council approval. Despite these delays, the project was completed within an ideal time frame. The final was $193,000 which is higher than the original budget of $176,000 because of the variations.
Maxine and Ken were delighted with the final result and appreciated the modern design and improved functionality of their new bathroom, ensuite, and laundry area. They were impressed with how the Refresh Renovations team managed to make the basement conversion feasible within their budget and were satisfied with the overall quality of the work.
The bathroom was in poor condition, so the homeowners were eager to add high-quality finishes. They want to transform the tiles and cabinetry. The walk-in shower became the main feature, and new cabinets provided extra storage.
Fresh trim, paint, and light fixtures Refresh Renovations turned it from a dull bathroom into a stylish one. The successful renovation was managed by Franchise Owner Lia Boersma of Silkworm Ltd, based in Wellington.
