Wanting to undertake a bathroom renovation of her own, this homeowner turned to Refresh’s existing projects for inspiration.
After seeing a Refresh bathroom project similar to what she was after, Hokowhitu homeowner Anne-Marie reached out to local Renovation Consultant TJ van der Vyver to undertake a renovation of her own. The existing set-up in her 1950s bungalow was impractical and unattractive; two bathrooms and a separate toilet with timber-clad walls, rippled windows, and an overall style that felt confined and dark.
TJ met with Anne-Marie to discuss her vision and create a new concept. Though this was her first experience with Refresh, she wasn’t a stranger to renovations and knew exactly what she wanted to achieve — two spacious and modern bathrooms, made by combining parts of the existing bathrooms together.
Since Anne-Marie’s vision involved reconfiguring the layout, TJ brought in his architectural designer who created realistic working drawings so she could see exactly how the design would look. This new design combined the separate toilet and walk-in shower and modernised a second bathroom with a stand-alone bathtub and vanity. After receiving an estimate from TJ, Anne-Marie was eager to move forward with the renovation.
Becaue of the layout and plumbing changes, the plans needed approval from the Palmerston North City Council which TJ organised prior to building. Once it was time for construction to begin, TJ brought in his Project Manager Michael Zhang to oversee the day-to-day operations on site.
Unfortunately, during the building phase, COVID lockdowns forced the team to pause. When they resumed, they were delayed yet again, this time by COVID-related delivery issues. Nevertheless, Michael made sure the project stayed on course, and TJ communicated the details to Anne-Marie, keeping her informed throughout.

TJ and his team hit the mark with these bathrooms, capturing every detail Anne-Marie hoped to achieve. The full bathroom now incorporates the toilet and shower. A glass partition with a minimalist black frame cordons off the walk-in shower and picks up on the other matte black elements in the design - the dual showerheads, towel rack, and LED bar light.
A large soaker tub is the main feature of the second bathroom. Its soft, organically curved edges add an air of sophistication. With the natural light from the window, the tiles, although the same as in the other bathroom, take on a warmer tone, varying the feel slightly while remaining cohesive.
Lustrous floor-to-ceiling stone tiles give both rooms a contemporary look and protect against steam and moisture. Each of the new bathrooms has black floating vanities with a triple-door mirrored medicine cabinet.
Anne-Marie is thrilled with her new bathrooms and had a wonderful renovation experience.
"We were really impressed with the process, the genuine interest in our renovation, and the amazing attention to detail from Michael. The sub-contractors were great too. Many thanks to TJ as well for the fabulous customer service; at the beginning during the enquiry stage, keeping us up-to-date throughout the renovation, and even through to the admin and invoicing."
