This 1970s Wainuiomata home needed a refresh in its laundry and kitchen. Renovation Design Consultant Tina Daisley not only improved its functionality but added a touch of modern style.
The homeowners of this 1970s semi-detached house wanted to modernise their kitchen and improve the functionality of their laundry. Calling upon local Refresh Design Consultant, Tina Daisley, they handed over the project for a design-led expert finish.
Following the unique five-step Refresh approach to home renovations, Tina undertook the design, scoping, and costing of the project. In addition to modernising the space, the homeowners also wanted to improve the flow from the kitchen to the dining room and create more bench space.
An additional requirement of the project was replacing the front and back doors which were leaking.
Functionality was key for the homeowners during this kitchen and laundry upgrade but they also wanted the renovation to be design-led and had a preference for contrasting joinery. Working both within budget but to the design specs as desired by the homeowners, Tina replaced blue cupboard doors with crisp modern white panels, the stainless steel benchtop was taken out and in its place a marble look benchtop, and the 1970s’esque lino was removed for modern wood-like vinyl flooring. This renovation provided an opportunity for open plan living to be achieved between the kitchen and lounge. Tina made this possible with a compact design of the kitchen that included floor to ceiling storage, additional above-bench cupboards, and the benchtop and sink aligned along one wall. This design also made the most of the natural light from a picture window over the sink.
The kitchen now links seamlessly through to the laundry with a white sliding door in keeping with the rest of the home. A matching benchtop above the washing machine, with hanging cupboards, complements the kitchen space.
The result is a kitchen, laundry, and living space that is as far removed from the 1970s as possible. Gone are the colours of yesteryear and in their place is a neutral colour palette that gives the home a modern, spacious feel.
Tina believes all of this was achieved through excellent design, planning and project management which enabled her to build within the client’s budget and timeframe.
