Quick & Easy Kitchen Revamp

With a brief from the Andrews family to transform their run-down green and cream kitchen into a chic, modern and practical space while staying on budget, Refresh Renovations Specialist Wayne Gordon knew the trick. A bright open-plan Mitre 10 Kitchen was the answer for the Andrews’ new kitchen space.

Choosing an affordable kitchen

Updating the kitchen design

Although the overall footprint for the kitchen & dining areas offered a generous sized area, it wasn’t functional or practical. The entire space was very dark and dated, not just because of the colours used, but because of the partition walls down towards one end which gave the pantry and storage areas very little natural light. The storage was dark and unpractical, and kitchen drawers and doors were beginning to perish and delaminate, with hinges and drawer runners starting to fail. The whole area needed to be modernised and lightened up, to better suit the client's sense of style and taste.
From an L-shaped dark grotto, into an accessible U-shaped functional space with a cooktop island, the kitchen is now an entertainment haven in the home. “It is now light, open and a delight for entertaining. The kitchen has become an integral aspect of dining, and a favourite area of the home for relaxing and socialising,” explains Wayne.

Carrying out the kitchen renovation

The selection of kitchen type and style came with ease due to the helpful displays at Stewart's Mitre 10 Mega of Palmerston North. “We were able to meet with the clients in store, introduce them to the Mitre 10 Kitchen Design team, and then 'walk & talk' them through the range of cabinetry finishes, benchtop products (from economical laminate tops, to engineered stone and granite options - something for every budget and desired finish), sink configurations, draw and cupboard fittings, hinges & handles, appliances,  tapware, splashbacks, and more.” Wayne and the homeowners were also able to visually mock up the entire look, selecting wall tiles and floorings on site, and discussing overall colour schemes by tapping into the expertise of other in-store Mitre 10 departments during the design visits.
