High-end hotel bathrooms without the high-end price tag was the brief for this 2.5 bathroom renovation in Mt Wellington, Auckland, and the finished result is stunning – high-quality, high-sophistication, high-end all the way.
Having lived in their Mt Wellington home for 16 years, owner Gary knew full well that the bathrooms were outdated.
Modernising the spaces was a given, but how? With so many styles, colour palettes, and features available to choose from, Gary was seeking not only a project manager to take the renovation from concept to completion, but also someone who could offer expert advice on the aesthetic. The homeowner's goal was a high-end hotel style of bathroom – but without the corresponding price tag.
Renovation Consultant Maree de Latour was the ideal contact, given her experience with hotel refurbishments! Responding to their call, Maree sat down with the owners to gain a thorough understanding of what a “high-end hotel” concept meant to them.
To help with establishing budget guidelines, Maree used past project examples to provide clarity around both the style to pursue, and also what Gary could expect from different levels of investment.
Gary’s wishlist also included making better use of the 13m2 space and creating more storage options – a key element in many bathroom renovations. The homeowner also wanted the renovated spaces to be fresh, modern and easy to clean. Maree worked with her designer to create floorplans and 3D images of the bathrooms that included modern and attractive fittings and fixtures. Gary opted to retain the existing layouts to keep costs down.
With the budget of $50,000 agreed upon and drawings signed off, construction on Project ‘High-End Hotel’ began.
Since Gary would be living in their home throughout, the bathrooms were renovated consecutively, roughly seven months apart, to keep disruption to a minimum. Construction across bathrooms and separate toilet ran smoothly without any surprises or challenges. Because of the time gap between projects, Maree was able to address product availability changes and suggest alternative options without issue or delay.
With Maree managing the entire process, the clients were even able to take an overseas trip during the second bathroom renovation, fully confident that Maree and the renovation team would deliver. The project was completed before the homeowners returned from holiday, allowing them to carry on that vacation feel with their new hotel-style bathrooms.
The renovation of both bathrooms and the toilet has resulted in understated yet extremely stylish spaces. The gorgeous neutral palette is enhanced with contrasting sizes and shapes that convey a feeling of subtle luxury. The dark-panelled floating vanity and full-height cabinet match the darker grout and feature tiles in the shower perfectly. As well, the clean lines and stunning symmetry of the cabinetry have created a beautifully-defined area in the en suite.
Showering in the en suite is now a luxurious experience enhanced by lovely floral tiles, a substitute choice because of supply issues, and now a favourite part of the whole renovation. As with all other elements of the renovation, the finished quality of the tiling work is exceptional.
Both Maree and Gary are thrilled with the final result, agreeing that their goal to have high-end hotel bathrooms without the high-end price tag was achieved beyond expectations.
Maree and her team were able to deliver the bathroom and toilet renovations on time and on budget, taking the brief and executing it down to every last detail. For Gary, the renovation experience has been everything he could have hoped for – and more.
“The team uses professional and friendly tradespeople, clear communication, and everything was finished to a high standard and on time. Of note, our second project was handled while we were overseas and magically was finished by the time we were back! With time between projects, Maree was aware of product changes and suggested alternatives, particularly with tiles which we now prefer more than the original! We highly recommend Maree and her team.”
