What is a typical schedule for a kitchen renovation?
Increasingly, the kitchen is the heart of any home, so deciding to renovate can have a big impact on your family’s day-to-day existence. It’s therefore important to understand how long the disruption is going to last in order to plan around the work and ensure that life can continue normally. Rigorous planning is crucial for the efficiency of the schedule, and the length of time the project requires will depend on how extensive the kitchen renovation is to be. For a full renovation and re-design you’ll be ripping out the existing kitchen and starting over, and this aspect should be achievable within a week. Once you have a blank canvas, you may need to consider re-plastering before building and installing the new cabinetry, worktops and appliances. This can take two to three weeks, while the finishing touches such as tiling, lighting, flooring and decorating will require another fortnight. All in all, that points to a realistic timescale of around six weeks for a full kitchen renovation.
What lighting options should I consider for my kitchen?
When you consider that modern kitchens now fulfil a variety of functions, it’s no surprise that creative lighting is at the forefront of all new designs. Aside from ensuring that there’s sufficient light for the spaces where traditional activities such as preparation, cooking and washing up are carried out, it’s important to consider how areas that will be used for dining, socialising and possibly even homework will be lit. As well as making your kitchen inviting, lighting can also make the space feel larger and – occasionally – warmer in winter and cooler in summer. It’s wise to use the planning stage to make decisions on the positioning of the lighting and the type that will work best to create your desired atmosphere, whether it’s spotlights, pendants, under-cabinet striplights or even freestanding lamps.
Is an open-plan layout the best option for my kitchen?
There’s no doubt that open-plan kitchens have become the default option in recent years but there are benefits and drawbacks. Going open plan creates the opportunity for the kitchen to be about more than just food preparation and washing up, especially if you plan on holding regular dinner parties where you’d like to keep all the guests together throughout. If you have a family, an open plan kitchen will enable you to keep an eye on the children while still progressing the cooking and clearing up, and you can even increase your interaction with them by involving them in some of the things you’re doing. An open-plan layout can also help you to make the most of whatever space you have available and to create a genuine wow factor.
On the downside, open plan kitchens can be noisy, with pots and pans creating quite a din, and that can be a barrier to conversation and watching TV. Controlling and neutralising cooking smells, and also the production of steam and smoke, is also more challenging in an open plan kitchen, so a high-quality extractor fan is a vital component. Finally, the best open plan kitchens are clutter-free, which can put you under pressure to clean and tidy on a regular basis.
Will a new kitchen add value to my home?
It’s difficult to generalise as to whether a new kitchen alone will increase the likely asking price for your property. What is commonly accepted, however, is that it will enrich your lifestyle and make your home more attractive to potential purchasers when you do come to sell it. Most buyers will focus on key areas and the kitchen probably heads the list, with the result that a re-designed and upgraded version can add in the region of 6% to the asking price as long as the new kitchen is in relative proportion to the house’s overall value. At Refresh Cambridge we believe that when it comes to kitchen renovations it’s sensible to look beyond the financial benefit and focus on the enhancement the new space can make to your family’s quality of life.
