The Starting Line

Having worked with Refresh Renovations on previous home improvements, Paul, the owner of this 1950s home, was happy to have Renovation Partner Wayne Gordon on site again. This time, Wayne would be taking on a kitchen renovation.
Not only was the kitchen a mismatched eyesore — old wood panelling on one side and scarlet red paint on the other — it simply wasn’t practical anymore. It desperately needed to be updated and refreshed, especially since much of the house had already been upgraded.

The Concept and Costing

Since the kitchen renovation entailed extensive work, Paul wanted to ensure the project would stay on budget. So throughout the concept creation and costing phases, Wayne made the budget a primary focus.
Reconfiguring a layout can be costly. But fortunately for Paul, the kitchen’s existing footprint worked well, allowing money to be allocated elsewhere to renew the interior.
Wayne’s careful assessment of project costs played a significant role in achieving the renovation within Paul’s budget. The final cost came in at $56,844 and was inclusive of additional work in the dining area, laundry room, and lounge.

A Sleek, Black Kitchen Design

The renovated kitchen is dramatically different from its previous 1950s make. The room’s interior has been entirely renewed with upgraded flooring, fresh wall paint, and a stunning kitchen installation featuring a sophisticated black colour palette.
Off-white walls and cool-toned timber floorboards provide a clean foundation for the all-black kitchen to make a statement, and that it does. The combination of matte black cabinetry and the glossy black splashback provide beautiful textural variation, as does the timber benchtop.
A well-balanced mixture of black and stainless steel appliances contribute to the room’s sleek style. Meanwhile, the black basin, tapware, and handles blend into the surroundings to reduce visual noise, and the clever built-in microwave shelf further minimises clutter, establishing a minimalist kitchen design.
Supplies used in this renovation include general building materials from Mitre10, flooring from Flooring Xtra, paint from Resene, and additional products from Chesters, Noel Leeming, and Fisher Windows.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to believe this contemporary interior is in the same room as the previous kitchen. Both Wayne and Paul are delighted with the results, and Paul’s especially happy he was able to achieve such a large transformation while staying on budget!
No longer stuck in the 1950s, the kitchen has become a beautiful example of minimalist interior design. It’s sleek, practical, and certainly proves that less can be more – and anything but ordinary.
