This tired Tauranga ensuite and master bedroom received a complete makeover, with special consideration given to space, storage, and simplicity with a stunning result.
When Donald and Isabella purchased their Tauranga home, they knew former owners had left their imprint – nicks, scuff marks, and picture hook holes in walls. The interior was beginning to look tired. After attending a Bathroom Seminar presented by the Tauranga Refresh team, they decided it was time to start freshening things up.
Updating the master ensuite and bedroom was the top priority. A larger, more modern ensuite with a spacious shower, increased storage solutions, and a refreshed aesthetic were all on the wish list. They were keen to retain the existing floor tiles and toilet though. They contemplated adding a doorway between the guest bedroom and main bathroom but chose not to do so after discussing feasibility and costs. Fresh paint for the master bedroom would complete the makeover.
During the initial consultation with Renovation Consultant Barry Brown, Donald and Isabella acknowledged their reluctance to manage multiple trades and oversee the renovation process themself. They had no desire to repeat past DIY experiences. This time, they wanted to carry on with their daily routine, knowing the project was in good hands, would stay within budget, and be managed efficiently. Talking them through the Refresh Renovation Five-Step Process, Barry was able to reassure Donald and Isabella that Sharon Giblett and her team would take care of every stage of the build, manage all aspects and individuals, and complete the project prior to Christmas.
Sharon guided them through budget considerations and provided comprehensive designs and cost estimates, ensuring full transparency throughout. Retaining the existing floor tiles proved to be a significant cost-saving measure. With detailed designs and final costings approved, Sharon and her team got to work on ordering and into construction a few weeks later.

Renovations began with demolition in the ensuite. Sharon’s team of tradesmen replaced the small shower with a larger, square shower complete with rainhead, revamped the walls, and installed a new wall-hung vanity and recessed mirrored cabinet for added storage. The existing ensuite door was removed and replaced with a barn door on the bedroom wall to maximise space in the ensuite, and the outdated towel rail made way for a stylish heated towel ladder. The team also installed a glass-panelled door in the hallway, and painted the walls, trims, and ceiling in the master bedroom. Throughout the process, Sharon’s careful coordination of builders, electricians, plumbers, plasterers, and painters ensured an efficient construction phase.
The project progressed smoothly despite two unexpected supply challenges. Faulty doors were delivered twice – firstly, the hall door, and then one of the mirrored cabinet doors. In both instances Sharon identified when the faults occurred and worked with the merchants and suppliers to resolve the issues. To maintain project momentum, the team hung the faulty doors and then installed the new replacement door as soon as it was to hand, rescheduling the painter to complete the prep and paintwork required. Despite these setbacks, the main renovation remained on budget and schedule, being completed in just two-and-a-half weeks so they could move back into their new spaces. The door was completed a few weeks after as it was a special made to order door.
The result is a simple yet stunning ensuite and fresh master bedroom. The ensuite now boasts a modern aesthetic with increased storage options in the floating vanity and wall cabinet. The glass-walled shower, mirrored cabinet, and sliding barn door work together to give a feeling of spaciousness. The rain head-style shower rounds out the ensuite makeover with a touch of luxury.
Optimising room layout, the rustic aesthetic of a barn door is tempered with the classic white paint and joinery to create a seamless transition from ensuite to bedroom and retain the modern feel. In the master bedroom, new coats of paint have refreshed the overall ambience. Moving through into the hallway, the new glass-paned door into the living area allows more natural light and flow through the house.
