← Back to locationsOne of the oldest inhabited places on the island of Ireland is Derry-Londonderry, the fifth-largest city on the isle and the second largest city in Northern Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish ‘Daire’, meaning ‘oak grove’. The city itself now covers both banks of the River Foyle and is characterised into Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east.
Home to a large port, international airport and a number of international transport links seeing it through to neighbouring County Donegal, Derry-Londonderry is a popular destination and was awarded the UK City of Culture as the inaugural location in 2013. Despite now being part of the UK across the border in Northern Ireland, Derry-Londonderry is still referred to as both names; with republicans usually referring to it as the former and unionists the latter.
Derry-Londonderry is the only completely intact walled city in Ireland and considered one of the finest examples of such in the whole of Europe. The walls make up the largest monument in state care within the county and are visited by architecture and history buffs from all around the world.
A popular place to live for those wanting easy access to both Northern Ireland and the Republic, the marks of history and culture are still easily found in Derry-Londonderry. The historical landmark of Free Derry Corner remains in the intersection of the Lecky Road, Rossville Street and Fahan Street (once graffiti on the wall of a house marking an autonomous nationalist area), canons can be found long the city walls, the Hands Across the Divide sculpture stands proud and the modern Peace Bridge across the river glitters in moonlight.
Derry-Londonderry’s location lends it to be the home of several large corporations and multinationals who wish to service the island as well as British companies looking to extend their reach. A bustling urban centre and one recently well popularised by the Channel 4 series Derry Girls, Derry-Londonderry is a fantastic place to live and boasts a rich and varied history and culture.
Home Renovations in Derry/Londonderry
Derry-Londonderry boasts the variety of house types you’d expect from such a bustling urban centre. The central part of the city has primarily modern flats and apartment conversions, with some terraced housing stock remaining where it hasn’t been converted into flats due to demand. Generally speaking, the further out of Derry-Londonderry and into the suburbs you head, the large the properties you’ll find; with semi-detached, detached and cottages all available a short drive from the city centre.
Generally speaking, property prices through Derry-Londonderry are considerably cheaper than most of the cities in the UK; with costs mirroring those of northern England, and often less. However, due to the nature of the city, demand here is exceptionally high and so finding a home can be difficult to do if action isn’t taken rapidly. Refresh Renovations has enacted some fantastic works and redevelopments throughout the area and looks forward to continuing on with more of the same!
